I began my career as a cadet photographer at The Australian newspaper in 1989, then working as a staff photographer specialising in Sports.  I joined Reuters News Agency in 1995, covering extensively news and sporting events in Asia, the South Pacific region, North and South America, Europe, Africa and Russia.   In 2003 I was appointed Chief Photographer Australia, until 2007 when I moved to Beijing, China as a Specialist Photographer.  In China I travelled to more than 20 Provinces, covering news and sporting events that included civil unrest in Xinjiang and Tibet, the Sichuan earthquake and assignments in North Korea.
In April 2009, I spent 2 months in Sri Lanka to oversee coverage for the ending of the 25-year civil war between government troops and the Tamil Tigers.
       I have also covered 5 Summer Olympic Games and 4 Winter Olympic Games, a total of 11 World Cup tournaments for soccer, cricket and rugby, plus numerous world athletics and swimming championships, Asian Games in China, and 4 Commonwealth Games.
       I moved back to Australia in 2013 from China as Reuters News Agency’s Chief Photographer for the Australia/New Zealand and The Pacific region, and was responsible for all news and sports photographic coverage.
In 2019 I became a freelance photographer for my own company titled DBG PICTURES.
